Owning a home comes with a litany of perks, but also some not-so-pleasant responsibilities. Having to replace major appliances falls in the latter category. In our day-to-day business as a gas furnace repair service in the New Haven County area, the experts at Air Specialties sometimes have to break the news to our customers that it’s time for a new furnace or air conditioner.

When something you count on to make your living space, well, livable, conks out, you have to bite the bullet and dip into your wallet.

If you find yourself having to buy a new furnace or air conditioning system, it might be smart to invest in replacing both at the same time. Here’s why:

A Shared Motor

Typically, furnaces last longer than air conditioners, with a lifespan of up to 20 years. Air conditioners tend to need replacement every 15 to 20 years. Unless you own a mini-split air conditioning system, which consists of an outdoor compressor and an indoor air blower, your furnace and air conditioner are symbiotic in that they share the same blower motor.

The function of the blower motor is what you might expect: It blows heated or cooled air through your house.

The risk in buying a brand new, high-efficiency air conditioning system and hooking it up to an old blower motor is twofold:

  • The air conditioner won’t run at maximum efficiency
  • The air conditioner could prematurely break down due to increased wear and tear

Money Saved in the Long Run

Replacing a furnace and air conditioner at the same time might seem like an expensive proposition, but if both are running together at peak efficiency, you’re bound to see the savings in your energy bills over time.

Additionally, choosing to install a new heating and cooling system means fewer major repair bills for either appliance in the near future. Of course, it helps to hire expert technicians to do the installing, and Air Specialties is always here to help!

Other Considerations

Replacing both your air conditioner and furnace at the same time is not required, and if you purchased your furnace within the last 10 years, you probably can hold off replacing it for a while. Remember to keep it functioning at full capacity by scheduling regular maintenance checkups and not neglecting necessary repairs.

During our hot, humid Connecticut summers attics and upper floors of a home can become very hot, even when central air conditioning is available to cool the space. If an attic is a living space, such as a bedroom, and is not connected to air ducts, there are a couple of options available to effectively cool the space.

Ductless Cooling For Attics

Cooling an Attic With Central Air Conditioning

If the house has central air conditioning, but there are no vents connecting the attic, one option is to simply extend the existing air duct system into the attic space. However, before adding an additional zone to a central air conditioning system it's important that a qualified AC technician inspect the unit and calculate the air volume to ensure that it can handle cooling and heating the additional space. If the AC unit or furnace do not have enough capacity, they may run longer than they should to condition the additional space, wasting energy and shortening the lifespan of the unit.

Cooling an Attic Without Central Air Conditioning

If the house does not have central air conditioning, or expanding the existing ventilation system is not an option, a ductless cooling system may be a good alternative. Ductless, or mini-split, systems are small appliances that can provide effective cooling and heating to almost any space in a home from attics and basements, to sun rooms and garages. As the name implies, ductless systems are stand-alone compressor/fan units that deliver conditioned air directly into a living space from a compact appliance that can be mounted on a wall, inside a ceiling or even under the floor.

If the attic has more than one room, the ductless system can also  be split into separate zones (up to 8 zones with some models). Like a central air conditioner, a mini-split system can be programmed to run only when needed. Most offer a programmable wireless remote and some have advanced mobile apps for controlling the unit while your away from home.

Ductless or Window Air Conditioner?

Window air conditioners can be a convenient and inexpensive way to cool an attic. However, ductless systems offer several advantages, including:
  • Better aesthetics - no ugly metal boxes sticking out of the windows
  • Window units block view out of the window and can allow air to leaks around the window enclosure
  • Better efficiency - Ductless system use state-of-the-art technology to provide highly efficient heating an cooling in a compact package. With SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) ratings as high as 21.0, you can count on these systems to meet your efficiency needs.
  • Quieter operation - no rattling and hissing to keep you awake at night!
Another big advantage of ductless mini-split systems is the option to heat as well as cool a room – you'll enjoy year-round comfort.
