Winter is here, and with it comes the worst time for your heat to fail. Before it happens, it’s a good idea to check if a furnace replacement is your best option so as not to put your home in danger or suffer through the cold without any respite. To help you figure out if you need a furnace replacement at your home in New Haven County, CT, we’ve put together this checklist of signs that your furnace needs to be replaced.
If you’ve ever considered scheduling a gas furnace tune-up for your New Haven County home, you may have a lot of questions about how many times a year you need to have an experienced HVAC technician come to look at your home’s heating. Is once a year enough? Should you consider more? Is it necessary to call a specialist out at all if all they do is clean out the dust in the system and leave?
Summer heat makes most people all too aware of the value of their air conditioning units. There are plenty of companies that start promoting AC tune-up services as far north as Milford, CT, during mid to late spring precisely because HVAC systems see so much usage during the summer. However, if you haven’t performed maintenance like changing your air filter, you should consider making an appointment as soon as possible.
With the weather getting warmer, you should start thinking about getting your air conditioner ready for the summer. Whether that’s calling up your local air conditioning repair service in New Haven County, or getting a new unit installed, you want to take steps now to make sure that you’re not caught sweltering in the overwhelming heat of the summer.
As warm weather rolls in, we are inclined to use our air conditioning more than ever. However, your unit might not be in top shape. If you’re experiencing mechanical or efficiency issues with your AC, it might be time to consider replacing it. Here at Air Specialties, we offer air conditioning installations throughout New Haven County and are here to help you decide if you should replace your air conditioning unit.

As a result, our service technicians have undergone rigorous retraining on the health and safety procedures they must follow while on call. Here are the steps we’re taking to ensure your safety:
Field experts are required to wear protective gear, such as masks, gloves, and shoe covers.
All frequently-touched surfaces, objects, and tools must be cleaned on a regular basis.
Field experts are required to implement a no-touch policy with customers, meaning no handshakes or other forms of contact are allowed.
Field experts must remain at least six feet away from customers, if possible.
Any employees who feel unwell for any reason are required to stay home and recover — no exceptions!
Please Make Sure to Do Your Part!
We implore you, one of our most valued customers, to follow the same health guidelines and cleaning practices at home and in public to reduce the spread of germs and bacteria. Furthermore, our call center representatives will be screening customers who require any emergency HVAC services to ensure the safety of our field technicians, as well.

Owning a home comes with a litany of perks, but also some not-so-pleasant responsibilities. Having to replace major appliances falls in the latter category. In our day-to-day business as a gas furnace repair service in the New Haven County area, the experts at Air Specialties sometimes have to break the news to our customers that it’s time for a new furnace or air conditioner.
When something you count on to make your living space, well, livable, conks out, you have to bite the bullet and dip into your wallet.
If you find yourself having to buy a new furnace or air conditioning system, it might be smart to invest in replacing both at the same time. Here’s why:
A Shared Motor
Typically, furnaces last longer than air conditioners, with a lifespan of up to 20 years. Air conditioners tend to need replacement every 15 to 20 years. Unless you own a mini-split air conditioning system, which consists of an outdoor compressor and an indoor air blower, your furnace and air conditioner are symbiotic in that they share the same blower motor.
The function of the blower motor is what you might expect: It blows heated or cooled air through your house.
The risk in buying a brand new, high-efficiency air conditioning system and hooking it up to an old blower motor is twofold:
The air conditioner won’t run at maximum efficiency
The air conditioner could prematurely break down due to increased wear and tear
Money Saved in the Long Run
Replacing a furnace and air conditioner at the same time might seem like an expensive proposition, but if both are running together at peak efficiency, you’re bound to see the savings in your energy bills over time.
Additionally, choosing to install a new heating and cooling system means fewer major repair bills for either appliance in the near future. Of course, it helps to hire expert technicians to do the installing, and Air Specialties is always here to help!
Other Considerations
Replacing both your air conditioner and furnace at the same time is not required, and if you purchased your furnace within the last 10 years, you probably can hold off replacing it for a while. Remember to keep it functioning at full capacity by scheduling regular maintenance checkups and not neglecting necessary repairs.

Jim and Mike were here and they are the best. Very thorough and dedicated to their craft. Please add the ability to add a 6th star in ratings for them!
I have been doing business with this company for over 20 years. They are always prompt and thorough. They are also concerned with ensuring I am happy and comfortable with the service.
Air Specialties has covered my mother's unit for about 20 years now, and we stay with them because of the quality and professionalism of their service. They are quick to respond to any calls for service, their technicians are courteous and efficient, listening to her questions and never failing to provide outstanding results.
Mike Jim were great! I’ve been using this company for a few months and they are very reliable, knowledgeable and professional! All of the employees that I have come across have been super nice. I feel comfortable letting them work on my house. I’m not sure who owns this business but they have a good team of people.
Called and left a message with the answering service on Superbowl Sunday.Got a call back the next morning. Pete, who provided excellent customer service came out Monday.
2nd time I've used them-very happy with everything. They call when they're on the way to the appointment, show up on time, and the owner has even followed up post service to make sure everything is good.
As a new customer with a no-heat emergency, Air Specialties was immediately responsive. Mike, their tech, was fast, professional and courteous. He methodically diagnosed and wasted not time in fixing the problem. He let me know what all costs wold be before proceeding and gave good recommendations for future attention to the equipment. - Thanks
Always there for you.......Air specialties is a great company, very friendly, experienced technicians and arrive on the job on time.......they get the work done!!!!.......have used them for years and always will......
I had a failing out with my old oil company, so, I was in search of a new company. Luckily, I found Air Specialties. They returned my call came out promptly, on time, within the arrival window. Mike was very professional, took his time to do a quality job. I decided to purchase a maintenance agreement. Peace of mind with your heating system is important.
I had my annual boiler inspection a week ago to be ahead of winter. Mike showed up on time when the time came. He is a thoroughly professional and pleasant gentleman who has always treated my boiler with care and patience. I so appreciate his help.Wendy had answered the phone when I called for the appointment and in a professional and pleasant way she took care of the scheduling and administrative needs. I never felt rushed like I was taking too much of her time, but rather, I felt like the company was working to help me get what I was calling for. When the inspection was finished I spoke later with Bob who was making arrangements for the replacement parts. In his friendly and professional way he answered the questions I had, and assured me they would arrive and be installed as quickly as possible. In a couple of days the whole thing was accomplished.Air Specialties installed my boiler quite a few years ago and they have maintained it fully ever since. Each person I have ever spoken to in the office or out in the field has always been courteous, knowledgeable and professionally up to the task. Over all of the years, I have been fully satisfied and happy that I called them to begin with.Certainly 5 Stars
This is a great company to work with. There are always on time, and always answer the phone (which no one does any more). They always call before the appointment and if there is to be a delay, they call.I have been using them for repairs and maintenance for at least 10 years. Last visit they installed a new furnace and condenser unit. They did beautiful work and cleaned up, to boot. I never heard a peep from them. It was a very good, positive experience.Every single person at this company is terrific.Best Regards,Joann
If the tech name James aka Jim is sent to your house. Please ask for another tech immediately. I had to update my review to 1 star instead of 2. I do believe the company knows James is a scam artist and is huge liability to their company. Don't ever let that man in your house
I want to share my experience and get feedback from people with the same problem.I have had AC in my house for morethan 16 months. Last month the unit died on me. After I called the company Air Specialities I was told the system had a leak. I agreed to add a refrigerant on the system with no warranty. I spent more than 800 dollars. The system fell less than 24 hours. My question is is that normal? I'm not trying to blame the company.Thank you and please share your experience.
Highly Recommended!!! I needed to replace my AC unit Very Helpful, Friendly & Caring Business. GREAT PRICES! The guys did an awesome job with installation. Be sure to purchase the maintenance plan for your AC and Heat also another great price! When it's time for maintenance the guys are very thorough! Thank you, Bob, Wendy, Pete & Mike I'm one HAPPY Customer
My mother has had a service contract with Air Specialties for many years, and could not be more satisfied with the service they provide. They are always prompt, courteous, and thoroughly professional. We would recommend them without hesitation.
Air Specialties did a phenomenal job of replacing my antiquated gas fired hot air heating system. After 28 years the old 80% efficient unit finally quit in January of this year. The team quickly responded to analyze the situation and provided 2 options. We elected for a total replacement after consulting the technicians. They quickly ordered and installed the new system to accommodate us given the time of year and outside temperatures. We now have a 95% efficient unit and Air specialties is returning in a couple of weeks to replace the AC portion of the HVAC system. I highly recommend this company as the overall experience from sales to engineering to installation was first rate!
Furnace stopped working this morning - called and had serviceman here by early afternoon. Fixed the problem involving a broken wire and furnace is up and running. Great service as always. Would never hesitate to recommend Air Specialties to anyone who needs HVAC service/maintenance/repair.
Gave a great price when we needed a new boiler back in 2020. Installed promptly and professionally, and they came back to ensure all was working well. They have responded both times we have needed some assistance, and they diligently set about finding a solution each time. Always friendly, prompt, personable, and professional.
Air Specialties has been taking care of my properties for over ten years, and they always come through!! Today our furnace went off during the night, we called Air Specialties, Bob was great as usual, he sent Pete to repair our issue, and again, as always, Pete is the man!! We have heat, and the job was completed within an hour and a half from our original phone call!!! You really can’t ask for better!! In short, I highly recommend this company, and will continue to call them for our HVAC needs!! Thank you!!!
I have been using Air Specialties for well over 20 years as they installed and service my forced air furnace, my hot water heater, and my central A/C. I live in an 100+ year old house and all the mechanicals are in a "basement" with about 40 inches of height. Through the years, their techs have done a great job removing old units that came when I purchased the house, to helping think about newer systems to use and that could fit within my space. Working in my crawl space has never been an easy task and at times, they've had to have up to 4 techs work to pull out old systems that were heavy and unwieldy up narrow steps all while hunched over. When I converted my house from oil to gas, I had them make the equipment swaps. When we had flooding due to Katrina/Sandy, I had them replace the units. In short, they've handled just about every heating/cooling need.Their techs have been prompt and helpful and their office staff is likewise responsive.I can't speak to their pricing as I haven't comparison shopped but they do a really great job, they don't upsell me for services, they arrive on time and get the job done.I'm happy to support a business where they do good work and if I call them the next year, they know who I am and what my system looks like and can readily diagnose.
There comes a time in everyone’s life when we have to make decisions on who we are and what we want to represent to the world. In both our professional and personal lives we must stand for something and stand behind something with integrity and honor.I hired this company to repair my boiler as the previous owner had a service contract with them so I found it only right to keep it. Recently my boiler has been experiencing problems so I called the company I could trust.Their fee is $179 to have the technician come to repair the boiler in addition to parts and additional repair time. As a business they are entitled to charge whatever fee they want and as a consumer I can accept or look elsewhere. I decided to accept but I asked that they simply not “turn the boiler on” but repair the boiler.Prior to hiring them I asked that the technician fix the issue. Not simply turn on the boiler temporarily at a fee of $179.Let me make one thing crystal clear I am in no way expecting everything to be repaired for $179 I was expecting and willing to accept additional charges for parts and the technicians work. But what I did not expect was for the technician to turn on the boiler and for it to stop working three hours later. My conversation with the technician was that my boiler is fairly new 2017 and there was two parts that needed to be replaced. The technician assured me that his work would keep the boiler running and the parts that needed to be replaced were to prevent the boiler from failing in its entirety.Three hours after the technician left the boiler stopped working. I called the office and left a voicemail. I informed them that the boiler as well as the hot water was not working and I waited for a return call.Unfortunately my illness was triggered by the extreme cold and I was hospitalized that evening. When I called the office back a day later I was told that I had to pay another $179 for the technician to return to “fix” the boiler again all this while they work on invoicing and ordering the parts that I needed.I know I’m from a different time when integrity was more dominant, and people backed their workmanship with guarantees. So maybe I was foolish to expect the work performed by this company to last at least 24 hours. And maybe I was naïve to assume that the company would stand behind their work for at least 24 hours. While I understand this review will do nothing in the grand scheme of things I hope that whomever reads this understands that there is more to life then charging customers over and over again for work that did not last even 5 hours. They have my payment in full while I am without. Ask yourself is $179 a fair price to pay for three hours of heat in this economy?I’m in a home without heat or hot water at this rate and the workmanship preformed by this company a “repair” lasting only three hours would cost me $1,432 a day.I’m disappointed and disheartened but I am powerless to do anything. You can’t make people have integrity
These guys are always ON TIME, POLITE and are A VALUE. DO use their maintenance plan. It is worth it.The prices are reasonable and they don't think of ways to pad your bill. It is fair and they do a great job.The "front office" is efficient and they really put service above everything else. They explain everything they do in terms a non HVAC guy can understand.I have done business with 4 different HVAC companies and these guys are miles ahead of the other companies in every aspect. They earned their 5 stars. I am super pleased to be a customer and when they say that they value you as a client, they mean it and they show it.Dr. Fred E and Dr. Kim E
On 11/15 I Hired Air Specialties to do maintenance on my propane furnace. Two guys arrived and did the job in less than 20 minutes which I found it super fast, but then again I’m not an expert. Then on 11/30 I hired a different company to do maintenance on my oil furnace, the tech asked me if I wanted the propane furnace to be serviced as well. I said no, since I had it serviced two weeks ago. Sure enough he opened the propane furnace and shows me how dirty and untouched it was. The tech told me they basically didn’t do anything. I asked The tech to service the propane furnace as well since Air specialties didn’t do anything, I saw everything the new tech did and I just couldn’t believe how I basically got robbed $211.64, I wouldnt recommend this company to anyone. Just because I’m a woman doesn’t mean you should take advantage, I’m paying you for a job so do what you’re suppose to do.
I called regarding an issue I thought I was having with the furnace- I received a call back within a half hour and they scheduled a tech to visit the very next day which was great! Our tech Mike explained what the noise was I was hearing and what was causing it. I will continue using Air Specialists going forward for any HVAC maintenance I may need- Thanks!!
this Is a class act company. They are professional and knowledgeable, friendly and helpful they go above and beyond for their customers. I can not say enough good things about this company and all the people that work there. I would definitely recommend them and give them a 10 star rating.
I have had a maintenance contract with Air Specialty now for the last 4 - 5 years, maybe longer. I have been very very satisfied with this company. Jim their maintenance technician is always on time and very thorough with his checkups. He keeps me informed on everything he does and what to keep my eyes on.Wendy is also very friendly over the phone with customer service. TOP NOTCH COMPANY !
Excellent experience from first call regarding AC unit issue, to options for replacement to actual replacement. Team is professional and courteous… keeps you informed throughout the entire process. We have Air Specialties do our regular HVAC Service and have always been pleased with their technicians and service. Highly recommend.
Responsive, helpful, and highly professional. In the last three years, air specialties has repaired/replaced a broken hot water heater and thermostats, installed a compressor for my AC, and performed regular check-ups. They are absolutely terrific, and extremely fast in taking care of issues that arise. I will definitely continue relying on them for my heating and AC needs.
Air specialties handled my entire complex total replacement of central air conditioning and heating perfectly.Bob and crew made my life relaxing for what could have been some what stressful. The 3rd floor central air conditioning, air handler and outside mechanical needed replacement. Air specialties performed on time, did not disturb other tenants, came in at budgeted estimate, which was quite reasonable.Without any rservations I highly recommend.Francis Vitagliano
Got the work done, scheduling a visit was quick and easy, but very expensive. Will avoid next time. Should be a 2.5 star instead of 3 but that is not an option.I just needed a recharge of the AC refrigerant actually - this was the first thing I said during booking and during the maintenance visit - yet it costed me $1064 total in the end. For comparison, last time with another company it was less than $400 total and spending 1/3 of the time. Here comes the breakdown of the high cost this time: Most of it is labor time (got charged for 3 hours $616 labor, first hour washing the coil outside and replacing inside filter, second hour doing the recharge - the actual recharge was done in 30 min and then the next 30 min just monitoring, and last 40 min essentially packing up and writing the invoice). Technician definitely was taking his time (each trip to the van parked 30 feet away takes 5 min minimum, multiple personal phone calls during the work, I also got charged $88 for the last 10 min just for invoice writing). This could have easily been a 1.5 hour visit. Yet he dragged it to become 3 hours. Besides the labor there is $300 for 2 pound of A22 for the recharge (very high price for this if you google), $75 material cost for washing the coil (just detergent cost, since water is from my condo), and $10 filter, plus $63 tax.If I knew this company is so pricy when I booked, I would have searched more for other options. When I asked for a quote initially they just said first 30 min is $176 and each additional 30 min is $88, and the rest is gonna be determined by the technician upon visit. To be fair, the technician did confirm with me each of the material costs on the spot and emphasized it's all up to me, but at that point I was already paying hundreds of dollars for the visit so would rather get it done instead of reschedule for another company given the hot weather and further wait. But I was definitely not expecting a 3 hour visit with all the drag. Did I mention the technician showed up 1 hour earlier than scheduled. I guess one trick to make more money is you show up 1 hour early for a 2-hour booking, and stay for 2 hour 40 min, and charge for 3 hours.....The bottom line here is they will pre-confirm the rate with you, but they will not pre-confirm the hours with you. And since what you pay is rate x hours, they will drag the hours and make you pay more, and still say "you agreed". I definitely did not pre-agree with the 3-hour length of the "work" with half of the time being just watching, slow trips to van, phone chat, and invoice writing. But I paid in full anyway. Here's all the info and I hope it's helpful to others.
Most recently John and Sam provided their expertise and humor to install ductless system for our 3rd floor. Heat really does rise. Bob provided marvelous plan for the system and was able to obtain the new wireless/app connection for Mitsubishi. They have maintained our main system for many years, keep it running and replace as needed with professionalism and reasonable costs.
This company was AWESOME. My A/C central air unit is about 3 years old. I wanted to have the compressor outside my unit cleaned. I called AIR Specialties and the process was flawless. From the time I placed the call (Wendy and Bob) until the day Pete came out to do the cleaning. I will certainly use them again. I'm just trying to decide if I want to purchase a contract. It has nothing to do with the company it's just me dragging my feet. You know the ole saying you don't need it until you wish your purchased the contract. Certainly if I purchase a contract it will be with AIR Specialties. What I'm not on the fence about is using this company again.I say give them a try and you will not be disappointed. Enjoy this HOT summer.
I contacted the company because my air conditioning was not working and we were in the midst of a heatwave. To the companies credit, they did come out the next day, and they did get my air conditioning working. The technician said it was my thermostat that was the issue. He went to his truck and came back with a form that I had to sign that stated the thermostat was $297.00. He worked on the blower, condenser, and installed the new thermostat. Shortly after, my a/c was working. Yeah! In getting an overview of my new thermostat, I inquired about a feature my previous one had (my old thermostat had all the bells and whistles and the new thermostat is basic). After the technician left, I went on line to see if this model did have the air circulator option. What I found was that the average retail price of this model is $50.00.!The following day I contacted Bob at Air Specialities. I inquired if possibly the wrong price was given to be by the technician given the fact that their price is six times greater than the average retail price. He said he’d check and get back to me. Several hours later he called me back and said he verified that was their price. I repeated that it was six times greater than the average price and is response was, “well you approved it”. I asked for my original thermostat back after finding the technician left with it, because I wanted to contact Honeywell and see if my thermostat might be under warranty and see if I can get one with the features that I liked. He told me that he didn’t know if it was available (it was less than 24 hours later) and he would get back to me. I have not heard from him yet. I question whether they took my thermostat and are not giving it back because there was nothing wrong with my thermostat in the first place….. was this just a way to charge me $505.00 for the total visit? While yes, I am grateful that my a/c is working, I have serious ethical concerns with this company.
Be aware! Before covid I contacted them for a quote/system repair and maintenance. They said that the system cannot be repair as it was going to be extremely expensive, and that the unit was so old that the parts were not available. They asked for around 15 to 20k for a new system (before inflation). They seem to be very nice, polite, and very professional!! I almost fell into their trap, as they know if you don’t know anything about AC/furnace. I decided to call a friend who owns a company in another state, he told me to call another company. So, I called another company they came and fix the unit in 45 minutes and cost me 100 dollars(some loose cables and they did not need any parts as the company was saying.), and they said I did not need to replace the unit. After 4 years, the AC compressor stopped working (last month), I called the company who fixed the unit and even with inflation the new ac/furnace unit from a good brand cost me 9k. Not the like 15-20 k that this company were asking before the inflation.(I can’t image how much they must be asking now).Just make sure you contact other companies before using them.Check the reviews in other sites like yelp.
From the initial call to schedule a repair appointment, Wendy was friendly, helpful and accommodating to my actual appointment less than a week later, where my technician Pete was on time, professional and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this company and will seek them out for all my HVAC needs in the future. Kudos Air Specialties!
Air specialties has very knowledgeable, helpful and honest staff. They came to our house several times during the winter, including weekends, to address heating issues in a very complicated system that they will replace. They did everything they could to keep heat in our house this winter. They are very reliable and responsive. I would highly recommend them.
I usually do not write negative reviews because I understand how they can hurt a business but I'm am very dissatisfied. I used this company on a Friday to help me with an issue I was having with a vent. The tech goes out there and tells me the vent switch was off and he turns it ON, ok fine. He also turns up the air pressure (something that I did not ask him to do, but since he's the specialist I am trusting him). He spent most of his summary call recommending me another product. Come Sunday, its cold again in the house and a weird sound is coming from the vent. I call an oil company to deliver emergency oil as I am thinking that is the issue (this runs me another $250) when the oil technician goes check the tank he mentions that there is sufficient oil in the tank for the furnace to run but that a fan in the furnace blew out. Nothing was wrong with the furnace before I hired this company. As a customer paying $200+ for a service the LEAST I expect is for the technician doing the job to be thorough. If on Friday the technician from this company was there why didn't he mention anything about the oil or furnace fan. I shouldn't have to call a different technician and pay an additional $250 just to have a problem fixed that wasn't even the problem in the first place. Not only was the technician from this company not thorough, he also created a bigger problem that caused me more money by turning the pressure up which caused the fan to blow out. I call for a partial refund or something, the response was to send the same tech out. How can I trust that? I literally paid $200+ to have a tech turn on a switch and recommend me products AND mess up the furnace fan.
